Our Review of the Hertzko Brush
Admittedly, Hertzko’s slicker brush looks and feels like just about every other brush in this category. But it does offer a few perks.
- It’s affordable
- It’s comfortable to hold, and
- The self-cleaning feature is convenient
We like the design and construction of the brush. It’s durable, well-made and easy to use. The handle is strong and ergonomically-designed to prevent fatigue.
The anti-slip rubber grips on the sides of the handles make it easy to use during brushing sessions. There’s also a thumb rest on the handle, which makes this brush even more comfortable to hold.
If you’ve used other slicker brushes in the past, you’ve probably experienced pain or fatigue in your thumb after about 10-15 minutes of brushing. That won’t happen with this brush. The thumb rest may seem like a minor detail, but it really does make a difference and will make your brushing sessions more comfortable.
The slicker bristles make it easy to comb through knots, tangles and mats from your cat’s coat. While it can’t get rid of severe mats, it can work through small mats without hurting your cat.
When the brush is full of hair, you can easily clean it using the self-cleaning feature. Just press the button at the top of the handle to retract the bristles and wipe the fur away. The retraction feature makes it easy to get rid of all the fur caught in the bristles.
With a conventional slicker brush, it can be really difficult to remove the fur from the very bottom of the bristles near the brush head. The self-cleaning feature eliminates this problem, so you never have to run your fingers through the bristles or use a bobby pin to pull out the hair.
The design of the bristles actually helps improve the health of your cat’s coat. The bristles are gentle to avoid irritating your cat’s skin, but they’re also stiff enough to boost circulation to the coat.
With a weight of just over 3 ounces and dimensions of 3″ x 5.8″ x 10,” this brush is lightweight and so easy to use.
We also like that there’s a hole at the bottom of the handle, which makes it easy to hang up for storage.
What We Like about the Hertzko Brush
The Hertzko brush may be simple in design, but it’s durable and really effective at removing loose fur from a cat’s coat.
The brush’s handle makes it easy to groom your cat for long periods of time without experiencing discomfort. The thumb rest on the handle is really a nice feature that you have to use to appreciate. Brushes can be hard on your hands, and the thumb rest makes it easy to keep going.
The self-cleaning function is – naturally – our favorite feature. It makes brushing sessions so much easier. Just press the button, watch the bristles retract, and then remove the fur with one swipe. Instead of having to take a two-minute break to clean a regular bristle brush (which makes grooming so much longer), I can take a ten-second break to remove the fur.
We love how lightweight this brush is, which only adds to the ease of its use. It’s on the smaller side, too, which is ideal for use on cats.
Of course, you can’t beat the price of this brush. We’ve easily spent more money on a simple pin brush.
What Could Have Been Better
While this brush offers a lot of great features, it isn’t perfect.
One drawback that you need to consider is that you can’t use this brush with every cat. If your cat has a short or thin coat, a slicker brush is not the right tool for you. In fact, it can actually hurt your cat’s skin.
A slicker brush should only be used on cats that have long and thick coats.
One other issue that you might encounter with this brush is that the blades may have some trouble retracting from time to time. This isn’t an issue for all of these brushes, but it can happen.
How to Use the Hertzko Brush on Your Cat
The Hertzko brush is so easy to use with your cat. Here are some tips on how to have a successful grooming session with your kitty:
Choose the Right Time and Place
Choose your time and the location of your grooming session wisely. You want to brush your cat in a location that she feels safe and comfortable in, like just outside of her bed.
Make sure the cat is resting on a sturdy surface. We also like to groom our cat after she’s just woken up from a nap. She’s less grumpy and more accepting of the brush because she’s still in a calm, relaxed state.
Use More Than One Brush
Slicker brushes are great for removing dead fur, but some cats will only tolerate the sensation of the bristles for so long.
Using two brushes throughout your grooming session will set you up for success.
When your cat starts moving away from the brush, you’ll know she’s had enough. At this point, you’ll want to switch over to a soft bristle brush. Use this brush for a while, and switch back to the slicker brush if you have to and your cat will tolerate it.
Make Grooming a Rewarding Experience
Grooming should be a rewarding experience for your cat. Make sure that you have plenty of treats on hand to make her associate brushing with good things (i.e. delicious treats).
Brush the Proper Way
Slicker brushes are really effective at removing loose fur, but you have to be careful of how you brush and how hard.
Applying too much pressure with the brush may cause discomfort, which may cause your cat to associate the brush with a negative experience.
You also want to move with the growth of the coat. You can brush against the growth of the coat, but you risk hurting your cat if there’s a knot or tangle somewhere in the coat.
The Hartzko slicker brush is a great grooming tool for keeping your cat’s fur looking healthy and shiny. While not perfect, this brush is still one of our favorites for our feline friends.
